Tuesday Tip # 10: Sore Throat

Is your throat feeing a little dry, slightly swollen and sore?

It’s officially fall in the northern hemisphere and the quality of the air is changing daily. It’s a bit of a tug-o-war between hot and cold as we linger in this transitional space while Autumn settles in. With the wind picking up, there is also a lot more dry air, which in access to can lead to imbalances like sore throats.

A sore throat is often the first sign that we may be getting sick. Let’s nip it the bud before it gets worse

Here’s 8 #tuesdaytips that may help :

#1 Avoid all dairy like cheese, cold milk and yogurt. Keep those nasal passages clear and maintain a good flow of energy in this area of the body. Heavy and cold foods like dairy often cause blockages leading to congestion that can aggravate and create soreness in the throat.

#2 Do the Lion pose. The yoga pose where you breathe through your nose and slowly exhale a big “ha!” through your mouth while your tongue is sticking out. Yes, that’s one.

#3 Practice the Humming Breath. Bhramari helps to remove mucous in your throat. Youtube it.

#4 Gargle with 1 cup of warm water and 1/2 tsp of turmeric and salt in the morning and evening.  The good ol’ fashion gargle with a touch of anti-everything turmeric.

#5 Drink a small cup of warm milk (warm milk has a lighter quality than cold milk and does not create mucous) with 1/2 tsp of turmeric. Warm milk is soft and soothing and with a touch of turmeric, a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-biotic, this can help.

#6 Enjoy 3 cups of herbal tea. 2 parts ginger, 2 parts cinnamon and 1 part licorice, 3 times a day. Drinking spiced warm water will help flush the lymphatic system and keep the digestion from becoming sluggish. Keep the fire going and avoid constipation.

#7 Get steamy with some rosemary or eucalyptus oil. This is a good option if you are feeling a sinus congestion too.

#8 Get some Zzzz’s. Early to bed, early to rise make a person healthy, thus wealthy, thus wise.
