When the season of winter is about to meet the season of spring, I begin brewing tulsi tea. A pungent, heating adaptogen with an invigorating taste and a surprisingly calming effect. Translated, tulsi means “the incomparable one”, and is commonly referred to as holy basil. Revered in the ancient texts of Ayurveda for its sattva quality, tulsi is called the queen of herbs. Unbeknown to be me, I’ve been steeping the dried herb with the queen of flowers, roses and the queen of spices, cardamom. These three ranis or queens love harmonizing together in my teapot. Balancing each other’s heating and cooling nature, with a little sassy-ness of tulsi’s peppery-ness, combined with cardamom’s sweetness, and rose’s aromatic floral heart.
Fairly quick to make. This blend does not need to be brewed on the stove when using fresh and finely crushed cardamom. A quick 3-4 minute steep and it is perfect for days when I want the creme de la creme and don’t feel like lifting a finger. I guess these rani’s are rubbing off on me. happy sipping. happy digesting.

A Tea of Rani's | a tulsi, rose, cardamom infusion
a calming infusion with peppery, floral and sweet notes
- 1 tsp tulsi dried
- 1 tsp rose petals dried
- 2 pods cardamom crushed 1/8 tsp powder
- 1 1/2 cups hot water
- rose water a splash
place all ingredients in a teapot and let steep for 3-4 minutes, strain and serve
- this recipe can also be made as a cold infusion, place all ingredients in a jar, pour in filtered, room temperature water and let steep for 4-6 hours or overnight. strain and serve.
