Golden Milk aka Haldhi & Dhood: An Immunity Booster II

A natural antibiotic. A daily vitamin. An immunity booster. A cough remedy. A reducer of inflammation. A blood purifier.

Turmeric MilkThere are many ways to make this golden treat. Below is the way my mom made it for me. It’s simple, quick, and effective. In comparison to Golden Honey, it takes more time, so I leave this for days when I have more time, want a treat, or can’t get rid of a cough. I encourage you to try it and introduce it to your kids as well. The cloves add a nice sweetness, and if it’s still too bitter, add a touch of sugar or maple syrup. This is a nice warm beverage to enjoy year-round, especially in the late Spring/early Summer. Opt for Golden Honey if you have a cold, or congestion.

Time to make: about 10-15 mins

Ingredients:
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 cup milk
2-3 cloves
1/4 to 1/2 tsp sugar or maple syrup (optional)

In a small pot, add milk, cloves, and turmeric. Over medium-low heat, cook until milk begins to rise, occasionally stirring.  Lower heat and continue to cook for another 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavor of cloves to infuse into the milk. Monitor this process, as milk tends to spill over. Placing a wooden spoon over the pot can help prevent this. Strain or remove cloves before serving. Enjoy warm and with love.

Reflections: Golden Memories from Childhood

Golden milk. Wow! It sounds so attractive. Back in the day, it was yellow milk. You get a cough a cold or just the fact that winter is coming and it would begin: “Let’s drink haldi and milk with loving” (not love-ing-ly, but with cloves). Like it’s a party or something. Other kids got hot cocoa…  I got yellow milk with floating cloves. Okay, so sometimes I got Ovaltine and/or a raw egg with honey and brandy (I actually really enjoyed it [wink, wink] especially when the honey crystallized).  If I already had a cold or a cough, then it was golden honey aka haldhi and mhud (honey). No enchanting names, just straight up. I have to admit it didn’t taste that bad, because trust me, there was worst stuff than this. I am not even going to get into it now, but lets just say it looked like ground tree bark. So, yellow stuff was like take a deep breath and swallow. Results: I never took an antibiotic until I got strep throat when I was 19 and still less than 5 times in my 4 decades of life. I think building immunity from childhood was key even though it was a bit torturous. Now, I am grateful.
